Chapter 2

In the midst of this chaos a lone wolf stood amongst the crowd. His name was Ross McDonald, only 21 but already claimed his fame as a local journalist. Recently graduating from university, he only wished to become a war correspondent. At the moment he was freelancing for the local rag (The Daily Blog). He, like many other young adults, opposed the war in Europe and the communist regime itself but only a few would know that these poor souls will be soon forced to fight and die for there country.

As events began to unfold, talk of mercenaries being sent behind enemy lines reached the ears of the public. Without hesitation, Ross believed this would be a very good story to write about, after all this would look great in his CV when applying for a job to sky news.

Ross first started his investigation at the library. He began looking into forums and chat rooms, after all, the mercenary story was only rumored by military officials and few members of parliment. Seeing as how the rumor was first discovered on a memo e-mailed to democratic officials by our prime minister saying that...

“My cabinet is in full support over the policy of sending soldiers of fortune behind enemy lines into communist alliance territory...”

During his investigation; he thought it was a good idea to hack into the Democratic Alliance database. Now a day’s, with the right programming, anyone could hack into any government database seeing as how governments tend to put very little effort into anti-hacking programs. Whilst thoroughly looking through government files he discovered a new policy the Democratic alliance had been planning for months. The policy was titled “Conscription”. It was seen as the best option for defense since there is little or no military personal. The policy mentioned that...

“Any man or woman between the ages of 18-45 who has not joined a military service within a period of 30 days will be arrested, fined and forced to join infantry ranks”

“Infantry ranks”? Thought Ross, but this translated as “cannon fodder” to him for he would be one of many to be catapulted out of the cannon. Although this shocked and bemused Ross the worst part of it all was that the new policy had already been accepted behind closed doors of the most powerful governments in the alliance and was to take effect “immediately”.

Quickly, he wrote what he had found. He said to himself “screw the mercenary story this will get me a bloody knight hood and hopefully my own news channel”.

After handing in his story to the daily blog, the public and news media went ballistic. Riots, protests and even death threats to governments sprung up throughout the Democratic alliance. Ross thought “Christ, what an up roar. Have I made the world a better place or have I made a turn for the worst”. Little did Ross realise that it was a turn for the worst, and it was about to send him on a global search for the ‘truth’.

Chapter 1

In the year 2020, war and poverty plagues the world we once had known as earth. The inevitability of oil and gas running out took its toll on the world economy and everyday life. Without oil there was no reason to stay in the Middle East and our troops returned home. Recruitment rate dropped significantly due to the government cutting wages and pensions to all military services.

However, small pockets of oil were discovered in Eastern Europe and there were still small oil reserves in Africa. As well as natural gas still in the North Sea. This meant many young men being drafted back into the military to secure these sites.

Oil had become very expensive by then so many countries borrowed loans to keep up with the high prices of gas and oil. Now the world was left in debt from buying oil and gas, but for Europe, they had entered a golden age from the profits they made from selling these rare and highly valued minerals. A lot of money was also earned from the repayments of the loans Europe happily gave throughout the world .

With much of the world in disarray many old enemies gathered in dark corners to whisper plans of conquest and domination.
China had re-introduced communism to Russia to help recreate the old U.S.S.R which the Russian government was more than happy to accept because the break up of the soviet block ended in poverty and misery, politics in Russia found democracy can get boring when you have had a taste of absolute power. China knew in order to seize control of oil they had to enforce Chinese law in other countries so Asia was later occupied by Chinese forces, which then became one huge Communist empire and already the new Communist alliance turned its might to Africa. Africa was left to defend itself from the the might of the red army. This would prove to be a decisive blow for Democratic countries in the future because within Africa the Communists could easily attack Europe from the south without any effort. Europe found this surprise attack from the Communists baffling but what they didn’t know was that there were still oil reserves in use in Nigeria, Africa.

A new alliance was formed between Europe and North America to combat the communists in the global market. It was later to be known as the Democratic alliance and they all signed a treaty stating that...

“...trade of gas and oil will be direct and adequate between the continents of North America and Europe... in case of war or financial crises each country within those continents will do anything to the full extent of there power to help in whatever way possible”.

The old tension and fear of nuclear war, not felt since the cold war, crawled down the spines of many politicians. Secretly under the cover of red herrings and controlled media coverage the governments of that time increased armament of nuclear missiles.

Weeks turned into months, months into years. The nukes pilled sky high but nobody was ever really prepared for the 'apocalypse', so near the brink of nuclear war all countries of the world gratefully signed a new peace treaty which halted nuclear weapons production and use. However that doesn’t mean there was not to be a war of catrostophic proportions.

“THE RED ARMY INVASION!” shouted the headlines of world news papers. The Communists had invaded Eastern and Southern parts of Europe. Quickly defeating any resistance they met. Governments plea to the there allies to the west of the Democratic alliance but many ignored there pleas fearing all out war.

However, our governments did find a way to help our doomed allies. Mercenaries had become a popular profession all over the world so armies of these hired guns were sent undercover into occupied Eastern Europe to help start resistance groups but sadly most crumbled in the first few weeks. However, there were few resistance groups that have made great strides in making the local communist governments hide in fear of their “terrorist” attacks. At the time the fall of communism in Europe was inevitable and the prospect of hope and freedom was high.
